Automation and Job Losses, how we can fix it?

In the article "Top 6 fears about future technology" it mentions how by 2030, nearly 70 million people could end up losing their job to automation. We're coming out with more and more high tech inventions that'll make jobs easier, which is good and bad, for some industries. For example taxi drivers will be heavily affected as self driving cars are becoming more popular each and every day, which will take away from them and their work.

With becoming a taxi driver, you really don't need any degree or secondary degree, you really just need some communication skills, and decision making abilities to make your job easier. You also would need to get your drivers licence which is obvious, but the rules differ depending on the state.

Looking back on the self driving cars, like Tesla. Many companies are planning on coming out with self driving cars by 2021, or that's at least what BMW, and Ford said, which will take even more job opportunities away from people, so what can they do after they lose their job? Well a lot of it depends on their education they received in either high school, or college. If you received good education while in school, then you probably have a decent chance of finding another job somewhere that'll pay decent as well. If you haven't received good education, then you're less likely to find  job that'll pay well, and it may be harder to find a job depending on where you, live and what you're willing to do.

You may think Automation is all negative as it's taking jobs from millions of people, but it does have its pros, in the work force. With Automation, you can have a higher production rate which is always a good thing as you can get your items out to more and more people in a shorter amount of time. You can also be more efficient with Automation as it'll use less resources which then means you have leftovers for more and more products.

With all of the new technology being invented and becoming more and more complicated, further in the future, who knows what we'll have to help us with our jobs, we may be looking forward to the help, we may need the help more than ever in the future, or it could ruin more and more lives and take more jobs away from us.

  1. Overall, I think you did a good job especially for our first blog assignment of the quarter. I liked how you focused your writing solely on self driving driving cars and how they're a threat to taxi drivers. I also liked how you not only included the threats of automation but the pros as well. I thought that it was good to include this because it has a different viewpoint. Next blog you should possibly consider going into depth more about the topic of automation as a whole. Maybe you should have provided one more job that could be threatened by automation. Such as assembly line jobs or jobs in the food industry.

    1. Thank you, I tried to focus in on one kind of job that would be effected, and what would happen if they lost their job. I should've spread out my thoughts and maybe included more jobs that people could possibly lose in the near future and what their plans would be to find a new job.

  2. Good additional research about the issue of automation and job losses. Was there any information about what kind of jobs people with a degree would be able to get? What kinds of jobs, besides taxi drivers, might be lost?

  3. Hi ian,
Are there any sort of long term effects on the economy either beneficial or otherwise for moving to more automated workers than human workers? If so what would they be?

  4. If this technology keeps becoming more and more automated and keep stealing jobs how is anyone gonna make money?

    1. If it keeps becoming more and more automated I believe we can re-train some of the people that lost their job and utilize them elsewhere. This won't be the case for some people so they can either find a whole new field and start up a different career or continue trying to find a place that's able to utilize their skills.
