Positive and Negative effects of social media

Positive and Negative effects of social media

With the 21st century comes a lot of technology, and to be even more specific, social media. With this comes positive and negative effects on yourself, and others around you and across the globe. I listened to 3 ted talks that all mentioned social media in one way or another, in which they either talked about the benefits, or disadvantages of social media, and what its doing to us and our future generation. One of the ted talks even mentioned that we don't need social media to hear about the news around the world, and stay connected with people.

The first Ted Talk I listened to was called ̈We ́re building a dystopia just to make people click on ads¨ talked about when you search for an item on google for say, and you ́re looking to buy it, it´ll pop up on different websites to try and sell it to you and get your attention. Or even better, if you ́re watching videos on a specific topic, it ́ll suggest something similar to what you just watched to keep you watching.

The second Ted Talk I watched was ̈Why you should quit social media ̈ I quickly thought to myself while watching the video, it must be insane to not have one single social media account on any platform. Mr. Cal mentioned he was better off without social media, he was happier but he wasn't anti-social. I think social media is a great way to communicate with people in a timely manner, but I do agree it's probably not the best way all the time as it's good to see someones face when you're talking to them.

The third and last Ted Talk was ̈How social media can make history ̈ just by the title of the Ted Talk alone says a lot, social media has and can become even more popular and make history for sure. When I watched this Ted Talk, it mentioned what happened in China when it had the massive earthquake, Twitter had to shut down, because realistically that's the only way to stop all the tweeting. With all this advanced technology, so many people around the world can share out legitimate information to the public, and others may make stuff up for views, likes, money etc.

  1. You mention that after the earthquake in China that Twitter had to shut down. Was this Twitter's choice or the Chinese government's?

  2. Hi Ian, I really like your topic and the information given throughout the blog. However, I still have some questions relating to the topic. Do you think with the increase of people using social media that real life interaction such as dates or get togethers has gone down?

    1. I personally think that with all the social media apps we have today, gatherings, and dates have been fluctuating throughout the years undoubtedly. It varies on the age as well, for teens I believe they're more attached to their phone which can either help their social life or ruin it and I truly believe it does both to most people. In my opinion it's probably went down more than up.
